$1m gold nugget found in WA
Tuesday 6 April, 1999 (7:22pm AEST)

A gold nugget, estimated to be worth around $1 million, has been found in the Western Australian goldfields.

The "King of the West" nugget will be auctioned at Sotheby's in New York in June.

The nugget is reported to weigh 25 kilograms or 800 ounces and be up to 90 per cent pure gold.

The finder wants to remain anonymous and has declined to say exactly where the nugget was found.

A number of prospectors contacted by ABC Radio today said they were unaware of the discovery.

However, Scott Wilson from the Kalgoorlie branch of the Amalgamated Prospectors and Leaseholders Association says there have been rumours for about the last two years of a major find near Leonora, in the North Eastern Goldfields.

Mr Wilson says the "King of the West" is only about 70 ounces lighter than the biggest ever nugget found in Australia with a metal detector, the "Hand of Faith", which was uncovered in Victoria in 1980.

That is still a long way behind the largest ever nugget, the "Welcome Stranger" which was found in Victoria in 1858.
