Anadarko files $1 bln debt/stock shelf

WASHINGTON, April 13 (Reuters) - Oil and gas company Anadarko Petroleum Corp.
filed Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission a shelf registration for up to
$1 billion in debt securities and common and preferred stock.

Net proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes which may include additions to
working capital, capital expenditures, repayment of debt or the financing of possible acquisitions.

Anadarko, based in Houston, Texas, is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company with 935.1 million
energy equivalent barrels of proved reserves as of December 31, 1998.

The bigger oil companies will continue to face cost pressures and stiff
competition. We'll still have more mergers and acquisitions. We'll still have
more cost cutting. We'll still have growth coming. But what you might find
is that some of the smaller exploration and production companies followed
by our E&P analyst Dave Wheeler -- companies like Anadarko Petroleum
(APC), Burlington Resources (BR), Enron Oil & Gas (EOG) or Union
Pacific Resources (UPR) -- will have greater opportunities for
outperformance. As smaller companies, they just have greater
opportunities to boost their overall level of earnings.
