What's this mallet stuff? You stick your thumb under the end of the cooked crab tail, and pull the whole body off (toward the rear end). Keeps fragments of shell out of your crabmeat. You use slip-joint pliers or hinged metal nut crackers on the claws. Who can control the force of a mallet exactly enough to avoid disaster. You people sound like you'd use a mallet on softshell crabs, which I have not heard mentioned here yet.
