I think you need to collapse your model somewhat and shuffle things around. I think the bottom, as you define it, is closer to the top than you suggest.

Much more DM and workflow work is being done, today, in net-based technologies, with the traditional DM vendors, than you might expect.

We are very happy to exploit the net and mail a url out to 3500 employees to initiate a new web based app. True traditional PC DOCS does it, FILE does it DCTM does it. Some use Java, some use ActiveX. Some offer both. All have extensive APIs. OTEX I liken to web-based groupware that happens to do DM and some WM.

I'd say you can roll up everything from 3a to 4b (skip 4a altogether). Your ranking seems to suggest that the True Traditional folks are still flogging nothing but big fat clients and two tier architectures.

Perhaps I'm missing your point, which must be that Quasi or True distributed file system based products have a competitive advantage. How?
