My point is that Oracle now has something that is much more than a
database. It is an application platform, which will certainly
be a big area of new growth for them. It is also a second chance to
enter new application markets (they blew their chance the first time
when things like SAP got started), but it's anyone's guess as to
whether they can manage to spread out into the new applications
areas that will arise. Their history in this regard isn't encouraging.

Oracle DOES compete with Sun on VM implementations. One area that Sun
is aggressively pursuing is Java server software, which is a lot of
what 8i is about. It's what Oracle's application server is supposed
to be about, too, but it's clear that the 8i version and the Oracle
App Server don't have much in common yet. (I will be very surprised if
that continues, though.)
