Have we lost something? Yes. We've also gained a few things, not all of them bad. Can we get it back by marrying off the 14 year olds again? No.

I think they still marry off 14 year olds in India. As for plagues, illegitimacy etc that's been around forever. Didn't have a lot of industry at the time of the BLACK DEATH (in the middle ages) which killed off a healthy percentage of the World's human population.
