One of the things that makes an LEO system theoretically superior is that the slowness of light shouldn't hurt it as much. If I* is really giving a half second of latency there is something wrong (or poorly designed.)

Also, if someone has measured the voice delay in a more scientific fashion, I'd be interested to hear the result.

Can you hook the I* phone up to a modem? I can give you a methodology by which you can do an accurate test, assuming you have two computers and two modems.

I'm hoping your result was an anomoly. Humans can sense deviation in a signal's latency of as little as 12ms. Up to about 150-200ms is acceptable, depending on the person. (This is visual latency, for audio latency I would presume the standards are more lax due to the differences in the way our minds process visual and audio information.) So, 500ms, even for an audio signal, should be annoying.
