Dell sees 1998 growth, more deals with IBM possible
FRANKFURT, April 6 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news) will grow faster than the computer industry this year but will probably expand by less than 50 percent, chief executive Michael Dell said in a newspaper interview published on Tuesday.

Dell told daily Die Welt it was ''quite possible'' his company may strike further co-operation deals with IBM (NYSE:IBM - news) after the two companies' $16 billion mega-manufacturing pact announced last month.

He also said alliances and partnerships in the computer sector were more important than takeovers.

''We can grow organically and we prefer this type of expansion. As long as we grow three or four times as fast as the market, we don't want to pursue a takeover,'' Dell said.

He said China would in a few years overtake Japan as the world's second-largest personal computer market after the United States.

''But Europe is also interesting. The economy there is as large as the U.S. but there are only half as many computers.''
