A very good comparison. BTW, the government of South Vietnam had been mainly composed of close relatives of Diem and his wife, Madame Nhu. So when Diem was assassinated that extended family lost power as well, and the whole structure of the government collapsed. This is the reason his death proved to be such a catastrophe for South Vietnam, because they lost a lot more than simply their President.
