A Giant Order

Dell Computer Corp. is looking externally for about a dozen executives to lead its rapidly growing business. Dell, Round Rock, Texas, hopes to fill two new corporate-level spots: a vice president of business development and a senior vice president, says a person familiar with situation. The other searches mainly are for VPs to oversee business development in various divisions.

For its top VP of business development, Dell may want to eye someone adept at technology mergers, an uninvolved recruiter says. One possibility: Philip Rueppel, a managing director of investment bank BT Alex. Brown Inc. Others urge Dell to consider Internet-savvy executives, such as Michael Baum, VP of e-commerce at Infoseek Corp., Santa Clara, Calif., or Brent Koehler, a VP of strategy and business development for Lucent Technologies Inc., Murray Hill, N.J. Messrs. Baum and Koehler declined to comment. Mr. Rueppel did not return a call seeking comment.

Korn/Ferry International is handling the searches. A Dell spokeswoman declined to comment.
