Game FPS matters ATI is in trouble because ATI is on a LOT of motherboard from a lot of OEMs.. in fact if I'm not mistaken that's where they get their major source of income. Pravin's concern was that since more and more chipsets are starting to feature capable graphics cores in the actual chip, it is a bad sign for people going after the motherboard graphics market (ATI is the current leader). While this is true of some customers, the most noise (hence marketing message) is coming from gamers. The acid test is in frame rate of real games like Quake3 or Unreal. Unless that performance bar is crossed, there's a natural limit to market share for the integrated solutions. If not based on actual usability (since not everyone plays games), then from the perception that graphics w/o 3D (or DVD) is not useful. The integrated solutions so far are about 1/3 of where they have to be to make this claim. If you believe Moore's law, this places them about 18 months+ away from making this happen. The other side of this argument is that box makers need something to differentiate their products. If everything was truly identical (hence commodity), everybody would compete on price and costs, which would put pressure on the P/E multiples for these box makers. J.M.H.O.
