Brian, The ASND group should have some interesting projects with the LU Optical group. For instance, LU/USWest/Microsoft are working on DWDM in the Enterprise. It will be interesting to see how Cisco and NN compete against the LU/ASND team in the optical area. Proving the Benefits of Enterprise-Scale DWDM Faced with increasing pressure on its internal network, Microsoft collaborates with Lucent and US West to experiment with optical networking..... During the first phase of the trial, which ran from May to September 1998, the company tested transmission among four locations on the Redmond campus. Simulated ATM and IP signals generated by test sets traveled up to four different wavelengths on the same fiber for varying periods. The trial employed Lucent's WaveStar OLS 40G, which can pack up to 16 wavelengths of light onto a single standard-issue or specialty fiber. Each wavelength, or lambda, carries a 2.5-Gbps OC-48 signal, for a total of 40 Gbps. The result: the network performed flawlessly, enabling Microsoft to experiment with the possibilities of this new technology and begin to learn how to fit optical networking into its internal network. It also gave US West perspective on the use of DWDM in its own network and those of other enterprise customers; Lucent gained a clearer understanding of customer needs for its DWDM products.... In a subsequent phase of the trial, Microsoft intends to add several layers of complexity to the DWDM network, employing actual ATM switches, routers and workstations rather than test sets. It may use one of the later versions of Lucent's OLS systems, which offers additional administrative features and much higher bandwidth, giving the company a further opportunity to test DWDM technology in conditions closer to actual network operations.... telecoms-mag.com
