Check your time in messages versus the time in daily activity. If there not the same the time in msgs probably the correct one.

I tried selling MSFT in the morning - I tried to find a level just under the bid - mindful of Vet's admonition. Well, it didn't execute, so I tried cancelling...

I think you misunderstood Vet's ordering practice just like I did at first (which he later clarified.) The confusion comes from the terms inside and outside. Your order will go to SelectNet if it is marketable, like a sell just under the bid. A sell just above the bid, inside the spread, will print on Island, and in a stock with high Island liquidity, often fill faster than a marketable order that goes to an MM. Of course if Island is on the inside with enough shares to cover your order, no need to use this technique, at least as far as speed goes. If the market is running away from you, placing orders between the spread will rarely work. But there really aren't any good choices in this situation, especially in the morning rush. Market orders just don't work in these cases, and marketable limit orders get treated the same way.
