Fwiw in the software business we always felt we needed at least one healthy competitor to validate a new space. The companies that came out with a new concept with no competition have a higher failure rate than those new businesses defined by 2 or more players... I wish I had the research report here to quote this with the numbers. One company that was a classic example of this was Forte Technologies (FRTE) - this was a real crash and burn Naz issue - opened for trading at 80 or so a couple of years ago and is now at 5. The lack of a competitor to assist with defining the space to the customer base was a topic actively discussed on that board (of course, it can be said that no competition means you have a bad concept in the first place).

This really isn't relevant to ebay/amzn exactly, in their current form since ebay effectively defined online auctions. However, as new opportunites are investigated ... (I don't know, real estate, equipment leasing, who knows what) then competition could be advantageous. So I dispute your claim that competition adds no value.
