free- will, we mean "self- determining", not merely unpredictable"

One of things that makes life interesting is that the various answers always have a deeper answer. There are layers and layers of questions which can be asked about our universe. Unpredictable has two main paths of study, things which have a definite result but cannot be predicted or calculated are studied through chaos theory, Things which are unpredictable because their outcome is truly random is studied via quantum mechanics (which provide only statistical solutions).

"self-determining" has many little pathways to go down. One can only choose from the choices available. How do choices become available? There are many productive areas for research in this area but sponsors are difficult to find. I've explored this a bit through artificial neural networks which are becoming more popular for voice and vision recognition.

It's always tempting to stick the and then a miracle occurs step into the equation before all the variables have been examined.
