Tiernan Communications Partners with Logic Innovations to Provide IP Data Services with DTV Broadcasts
A Joint Demonstration Will be Held at NAB
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999-Tiernan Communications Inc. and Logic Innovations Inc. today announced the availability of an integrated system that incorporates IP data with digital television broadcasts.

At the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show, April 19-22, a joint demonstration will be held in Tiernan's booth, number S4771 showcasing Tiernan's digital television system with Logic Innovations' IP Encapsulator Data Gateway (IPEDG).

This system integration combines IP-based services (including: Web page caching, high speed file transfer and Internet access) with digital television broadcasts. The advantage of this system for broadcasters is the ability to offer IP data services along with digital television broadcasts.

''We selected the IPEDG for integration with our system because of its superior performance and Logic Innovations' experience in developing digital broadcast equipment,'' said Keith Dunford, vice president, marketing of Tiernan Communications. ''By integrating the IPEDG with our digital television system, we are now able to offer fast track IP service integration to legacy broadcasters.''

As part of Tiernan's 4-channel multi-channel system demonstration at NAB, Logic Innovations' IPEDG will encapsulate IP data into a DVB transport stream. The IPEDG will then feed the DVB transport stream to Tiernan's TE333B encoder, which will multiplex the transport stream with the digital television service.

''This announcement is significant because it represents the emergence of new opportunities for broadcasters,'' said Frank Creede, president of Logic Innovations. ''Tiernan is an established leader in digital television system development with several key broadcasters as customers. We're pleased that the IPEDG will help broadcasters add IP to their existing service, creating a total solution for digital television and data broadcasting.''

The IPEDG has the capabilities to ensure the smooth integration of IP data with digital television broadcasts. It is compatible with all major DVB receivers such as CleverCast PC(TM), Satellite Express(TM) and MediaCast(TM). The versatile IPEDG operates with leading IP multicast applications including Starburst Multicast, NetShow(TM), Fazzt(TM) and IP/TV.

With multiple output interfaces, the IPEDG provides direct connectivity to equipment from a variety of industry leaders and supports cable, satellite and LMDS networks. The IPEDG's high throughput of 54 Mbps and 100 percent utilization of a satellite transponder provides efficient and cost effective data broadcasting. Other IPEDG features include support for one-to-one redundancy and controls for quality of service.

Tiernan Communications Inc. designs, develops and manufactures a full line of digital television compression and transmission equipment. Tiernan equipment is used worldwide by broadcasters, cable operators, and common carriers to achieve the highest levels of quality, performance and economy in the distribution of digital television programming.

The company's products are essential in digital television operations, satellite news gathering, and in the distribution of television programming via satellite and terrestrial networks. Tiernan products meet or exceed the most rigorous industry quality standards. Over 200 users in some 25 countries presently operate more than 1,000 Tiernan digital television systems.
