Some research I found at skyreport.com - indicates huge growth expected in cable TV and satellite TV set-top box market, for which ATI makes graphics chips.

Set-Top Boxes To Topple IDTV

According to research from Strategy Analytics, set-top boxes will dominate the home entertainment center in the future, relegating the TV set to the role of a "dumb monitor."

The firm, in research titled "Set-top Boxes and Dumb Monitors - The Impact of IDTV On the TV Receiver Industry," forecasts that by 2005, only 6 percent of U.S. households will own an IDTV (Integrated Digital TV set) compared to 63 percent with digital set-top boxes. In Europe, IDTV will hardly gain a foothold.

Because of the need for technology and service upgrades, such as new software, storage devices, or faster modems, buyers of Integrated Digital (IDTV) TV sets could be left with expensive and obsolete products. The cheaper, flexible option is to buy a set-top box that can be replaced at minimal cost when upgraded services are introduced.

According to the report, TV manufacturers have pursued an "integration strategy" - incorporating new content platforms in order to add value to the TV receiver. Examples include VCRs, PCs, pay TV decoders and disc players. But these policies have nearly always failed, the firm states.

"The strategies of TV manufacturers have reflected their needs rather than the needs of the marketplace," says David Mercer, Interactive Home Service director with Strategy Analytics. "The TV set has effectively been a dumb monitor for many years, and the arrival of digital will not change this."

It's has always been that way, they had the Rage I , Rage II, Rage pro...and now it's the Rage 128 Pro . It's not a new card but a new chip that will drive performance on all of the company actual card and maybe also new cards in the future.

About the price, you know i'm in for the VERY long run in my core position, so i don't really care about day to day price appreciation, i like it better when it's up, (heart is going faster) but it has to go down if i want to increase it ;-)

Funny to see the trading patern since the news, it look like people are all waiting for somebody to make the move, i think it will close up 1$ at least . JMHO and i've been wrong on predicting day to day stock movement in the past.

On the short-selling question, here is the relevant March 22nd info from my site. For more info on the meaning of the various measures, go back to my site and check the definitions.

ATY
Days to cover 25
Group average 2.2
Rank in group 4

Percent of float short 3.9%
Group average 4%
Rank in group 165

In general, this suggests to me that while ATI has a significant short interest, the "problem," such as it is, has more to do with the company's relatively small trading volumes rather than any overwhelmingly negative sentiment.

Best.
