3Com Commits $1 Million Towards Rolling Meadows
Metropolitan Area Network; Technology Initiative Will
Build a State-of-the-Art, High-Speed Regional Network
01:08 p.m Apr 08, 1999 Eastern

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1999--
Global networking leader 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS)
today announced a $1 million commitment
in 3Com(R) products, services and
expertise to the city of Rolling Meadows,
Ill., for use in building a high-speed,
metropolitan area network (MAN) and
expanding use of the Internet to improve
city-wide communications.

The City of Rolling Meadows, home of
3Com's Midwest headquarters, will team
with Rolling Meadows Park District,
libraries, school districts, as well as 3Com,
to enhance communications and empower
the community through technology.

"The Rolling Meadows Metropolitan Area
Network (RMMAN) is an exciting
opportunity to foster a more cohesive and
enabled community, and reflects 3Com's
commitment to bring value to the areas in
which we live and work," said Jerry
Devlin, Vice President and General
Manager of 3Com's Personal
Communications Division. "The RMMAN
will open doors to many types of user
applications, from students and teachers
posting class assignments and homework
online, to filling prescriptions with local
pharmacies. The possibilities are endless
for helping Rolling Meadows' residents
become more connected to the information
that will enrich their lives."

The Rolling Meadows Technology
Committee, which consists of
representatives from the participating
organizations, is seeking additional
supporters. The committee has established
goals for the MAN, beginning with
research on use of computer technology by
the city's residents and businesses.

"The RMMAN is a prime example of our
basic strategy for developing collaborative
partnerships that will benefit the citizens of
Rolling Meadows," said Mayor Thomas F.
Menzel. "The City, along with 3Com, will
lead this major technology initiative to
make Rolling Meadows a truly wired
community, expanding the use of the
Internet to improve communications with
our business customers and citizens."

The unifying element of this first phase of
the RMMAN will be to create a common,
umbrella-like World Wide Web page,
linking involved jurisdiction homepages,
as well as Rolling Meadows business
owners, enabling e-commerce. The
ambitious RMMAN will also foster home
Internet connectivity and enhanced public
Internet access at various city offices,
libraries, community centers and public
area kiosks.

Future applications from the MAN
deployment may range from online
registration for parks and recreation
classes, online bill payment, electronic
notices and community opinion polls, and
remote instruction for students unable to
attend classes at school.

"We want to create opportunities for all
households in Rolling Meadows to have
access to the Internet through cost-effective
and reliable means," said Rolling Meadows
City Manager William P. Barlow III. "The
goal of technology equality is so essential
that plans for creating programs such as a
connectivity foundation to help provide
Internet access to economically
disadvantaged households, through grants
or low interest loans, will be a future
possibility." About 3Com Corporation
