Gary - (...Competition at the design stage is also entails such differentiating factors as feature set (which are far from identical), performance (which is not just a MHZ criteria), and probably most important, the software development environment...)

This is all true, but in the end all the engineers who have to deal with hardware dependencies (not just high level SW) will likely have had experience with multiple vendors. The winning vendor will have to come in with the lowest credible production (system) price when compared with all the others who qualify on all performance and time to market counts. Unless the DSP vendor can provide a unique feature that can differentiate the end product, it still comes down to a commodity like price competition, with a number of hurdles which must be cleared just to play. The customer doesn't grade on degree of difficulty, just price and final end product delivery.
