Steven, I hate to say it, but 250,000 customers ain't a lot when it comes to ISPs. NW Road Runner Races Past 250,000 Customer Milestone Business Editors RESTON, VA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--Road Runner, the high-speed online service jointly owned by Time Warner, MediaOne Group, Microsoft Corp., Compaq Corp., and Advance/Newhouse, announced today that it had in excess of 250,000 subscribers as of the end of first quarter '99. Installations have surged across the nation with all Road Runner affiliates reporting higher weekly installations and decreasing churn. "The popularity of the Road Runner service continues to grow faster than we anticipated," said Carl Rossetti, Interim CEO for Road Runner. "And, almost all of our first quarter growth is attributable to increased penetration in the markets where we are deployed. In the near future we will be launching several large new markets including Cincinnati, Houston, Orlando and Richmond which will, of course, add exponential growth". Road Runner's largest cluster of subscribers is in the northeast region. A data and operations center located in Chelmsford, Mass., serving about 124 towns in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, currently boasts over 50,000 subscribers with a penetration of 5.17 percent of the total area served. Twenty-two of these communities have surpassed penetrations of 10 percent and five have surpassed 15 percent. Portland, Maine continues to boast the highest Road Runner penetration of all homes passed by cable in an entire metropolitan area, capturing 14.55 percent. In addition, several other large areas are reporting over 5 percent penetrations of the total homes passed by their cable system including Albany, New York, Binghamton, New York and San Diego, California. Road Runner is currently available to approximately 8 million homes. The service will eventually be able to reach more than 30 million cable homes nationwide.
