Vol, Datek went from best to worst for short availability. It used to be I'd never get a borrow at Waterhouse, and Datek would lend anything over 5. Nowadays just about everything that is interesting is marked NM (no margin) or NS (no shorting) at Datek. I have been able to get stuff at Waterhouse lately that I never would have thought available a few months ago, so they're much better now.

If you want access to most of Yamner's short inventory but want cheaper commissions, try DLJ Direct. Both clear through Pershing. I have heard that you can even short BB's through DLJ Direct. I've also heard customer service is horrible. I've never traded with them, so your DD is definitely required.
