If you think the refugees do go back in their lifetimes, a. how will they rebuild their basic infrastructure, and identities there? How much money will it take, and who will provide it? b. Will anybody be controlling the KLA, or if SM is booted out, will they retaliate against the remaining Serbs in Kosovo? Remember that the Albanians were the ones ethnically cleansing Kosovo of Serbs years ago. What is to stop them from doing it again once our back is turned except on-the-ground troops? c. These people have been fighting over the land for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Do you really think it will stop now? Or will the Albanian Kosovans retaliate against the Serbs, and then the Serbs feel they have to retaliate against the Albanians, and it all escalate again once more as it has countless times in the past? d. Suppose SM gives up and retreats to, say, Moscow, which gives him asylum and refuses to give him up for any international trial. Do you really think that ends it all? How many in the army and police do you have to purge? How do you purge a whole nation which has grown up hating people for generations? Did this bombing really help? Do you think there will be ANY trust for any system/government supported by the US or NATO? Yes, it's heartbreaking. But it's their hearts, they have been breaking for thousands of years, and destroying their country isn't going to stop them from breaking hearts again as soon as we leave. We have a ceasefire at present on the ground. Any further bombing we do cannot be justified as trying to save the refugees. It is purely for revenge. It further inflicts misery without need or moral or legal basis. We have the power to level all of Yugoslavia and turn the whole country into a parking lot for Europe. And, frankly, I think that is the ONLY way that the violence in the Balkans will ever end.
