Excerpts from an internal email: Today at the Executive Alliance Summit in Palm Springs, Sun will announce the arrival of new products and services that open the door to markets worth more than $30 billion--markets that were previously accessible only to Windows NT system vendors. Sun's value proposition is compelling: no matter where or how customers use Windows NT network services within their organization, Sun can increase their reliability, scalability, and cost-efficiency. Equally important, by integrating the Windows NT network more closely with the Sun platform now, customers position themselves to take advantage of Suns clear leadership in network computing well into the future. The new products and services include: * Solaris(TM) PC NetLink software (code-named Project Cascade): Solaris PC NetLink delivers native Windows NT network services--which includes directory, authentication, and file and print services--on Solaris servers. As a result, users get familiar network services on a more reliable and scalable platform. PC NetLink also enables customers to consolidate their Windows NT servers onto fewer Sun servers, cutting costs and complexity. Shipping this month, Solaris PC NetLink will be included at no additional cost with new 1-8 CPU Sun Enterprise servers and will come with an unlimited client license -- unheard of in the PC server space. * The SunPCi(TM) co-processor card: Now with support for Windows NT, the SunPCi card puts a complete Windows NT PC inside a Sun workstation, eliminating the need for two separate computers on the desktop. The SunPCi card lets users run Solaris and Windows NT applications simultaneously--at native speed. They can cut and paste between Solaris and Windows NT applications. And they can leverage a huge application base that includes all Windows NT applications as well as more than 12,000 Solaris applications. * Microsoft Windows NT-certified storage products: Sun StorEdge A1000, A3500, and A5000 family disk array products are now Microsoft Windows NT certified, which means they have passed Microsoft's own tests and appear on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility list. As a result, customers can now protect their Windows NT data with industry leading mission-critical storage systems. * New Server Consolidation services: We've added new services that may lower the total cost of ownership for customers by reducing the number of servers required in an enterprise. Included in the solution are PC NetLink deployment services. In addition, education solutions for Windows NT and Solaris Operating Environment integration are also available to train customers on heterogeneous environments. The SunSpectrum(SM) Support Program is available for the PC NetLink and Microsoft-certified storage products.
