Tony: I would highly recommend the book DIRECT from DELL...

Last year DELL spent over $300M on R&D and received hundreds of patents. Yet, they use the virtual integration business model and acquire access to technology VERY efficiently. In the storage area DELL now has access to NTAP and IBM technology. DELL will take the storage market VERY seriously and is ramping up as we speak. They already sell tons of PCs and servers to the Fortune 1000 companies. The relationships are in place. IMHO, soon DELL will add more service capabilities (eg. through an alliance with IBM) and go after the high end enterprise storage market. Ultimately, this will affect EMC. DELL is a tough competitor and should not be underestimated. Listen to what Michael Dell has to say about storage products at the DELL analyst meeting later this week.

Good Luck Investing.

Regards,

Scott

Re: what does Dell have going for it, in any part of their business, that differentiates them from any box maker?

An excellent knowledge of supply chain management. Obviously that's not the answer you're looking for, but it's as important as more traditional IP as they've amply demonstrated.
