Not always true. Take NOVL. Dunno how many times they were reported on the verge of being taken out by IBM. It went on for days and weeks, where the company did not comment (neither did IBM). Then all of a sudden everything fell through and NOVL finally announced that there was no deal. This happened a few times as I recall. Some would argue that there never was a deal, and that NOVL only remained silent to help out their flailing stock price (which went down to $6 at one point).

But your point is well taken. Usually when mgt says nothing in the face of such an onslaught of takeover rumors, there is something to it. However, it does NOT mean that anything is imminent, even though we may hope so!
