Hi Alex. wonder if this will be the next big trouble spot. China Must Strengthen Military Capability in Face of Hegemonism: Jiang BEIJING, April 6 (AFP) - President Jiang Zemin Tuesday called on China to strengthen and modernize its military preparedness in the face of rising hegemonism. "At present, the international situation is generally relaxed, but ... unstable elements continue to exist as new developments in hegemonism and power politics appear," Jiang said, quoted by China Central Television. His comments came as Premier Zhu Rongji headed to the United States for a tricky official eight-day visit amid differences over the Kosovo crisis. China has bitterly criticised the NATO air strikes on Yugoslavia, as interference in another country's affairs. China must strengthen its military power through science and technology and boost its fighting capabilities, Jiang told members of the Beijing military region. "We must make efforts to educate a large group of highly-qualified military personnel ... and raise the state of readiness of our armaments," said Jiang, who also serves as head of the powerful Central Military Commission. Seen on the nationwide news broadcast in a drab olive green Mao suit, Jiang was flanked by commission vice chairmen Zhang Wannian and Chi Haotian, China's two highest ranking military officers. Zhu warned in an interview over the weekend with a US daily that violations of the sovereignty of independent nations could eventually lead to world war. The leading People's Daily, while accusing NATO of human rights violations, Tuesday called Yugoslavia a "test field" for new military technology. chinatimes.com.tw
