Per the 4-2-99 Valueline expanded edition, page 35, ALSC has a rating of 3,4 (average timing, last but one safety!) - but is listed as one of the stocks having the widest discount from book value. They list it as having a value of 40 % of book value at the 2 15/16 price.
This means the book value is around $ 7.5. But they list "book value" as $ 4.99. I think they made a calculation error or their book value is wrong! Either way - the stock is at a pit bottom of $ 2.5. I would take a risk and buy now. Even if it hits $ 4, you got a 50+ % return.
It was as high as $ 6 two months ago! IMHO, they are not going to disappear! I'll throw in two more beaten down dogs for you to spice up your portfolio - XICO and ISSI! Keep fishing and happy trading!
