Am I being feeble-minded when I venture to say @Home-TCI-AT&T could be interested in RealNetworks as much or more as America Online?

No. Such a combination would make sense for both ATHM and RNWK. But the fact remains, RNWK has made it clear that they are not looking to combine with anyone. And they don't need to do so right now. They're doing very well by themselves.

But at least the notion of an ATHM/RNWK combo makes sense, unlike the wacky notion of AOL/RNWK. @home and Real are both technology-focused companies. For different but complimentary reasons, both have significant interest in seeing expansion of bandwidth on the backbone and to each machine. And then there's ATHM's controlling partner, AT&T. They probably hold more patents on sound technologies than anyone else in the world. They might actually be able to help Real leapfrog the competition.

But none of it matters. Real isn't looking for a merger or buyout. And I think that's the most significant point of all.
