IBM Alerts Customers to CIH Virus in Small Number of Aptiva PCs
Business Wire - April 06, 1999 13:04
SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--IBM has determined that a small number of Aptiva(R) PCs with model numbers 240, 301, 520 and 580 manufactured between March 5 and March 17, 1999, and sold in the United States, have been exposed to the CIH computer virus. No other Aptiva models or IBM products are known to be affected. The CIH virus, which is spread from one PC to another when an executable file is transferred, may render an infected PC inoperable when the date on the PC's internal calendar reads April 26 of any year.

IBM has identified several thousand Aptivas that may be affected, and has already contacted most of these customers to provide them with instructions for protecting their PCs and data. IBM has already provided retailers with information and assistance to ensure that Aptiva PCs currently in stores are now free of this virus. To determine if a particular computer might be affected, customers should consult the IBM sticker with the Underwriters Laboratory logo on the back of their Aptiva system unit. The potentially affected computers have one of the following codes after "MFG DATE": AM909, AM910 or AM911.

All potentially affected customers who have registered their Aptiva with IBM Owner Privileges, and all others for whom IBM has a current, valid address, have already been contacted and will automatically receive an IBM Antivirus Update CD. The Antivirus Update CD quickly and easily scans the computer for the virus, and removes it if found. The CD also updates the antivirus data files to enable Norton AntiVirus, preloaded with each Aptiva PC, to search for and clean new viruses. Additionally, IBM is making its Antivirus Update program available to Aptiva owners electronically through the "Update Connector" feature, which allows Aptiva owners to download and install system updates.

For more information, IBM Aptiva owners can log on to www.ibm.com/support and go to "Short cuts" or call the IBM HelpCenter around-the-clock at (800) 600-8235.

IBM wants all PC users to be aware of this well-known virus, and to be careful in receiving and/or launching executable files via e-mail. IBM also encourages all PC users to update their anti-virus protection on a regular basis.
