"The US cannot survive on virtual food, virtual tax revenues, or a virtual military. By the time we discover this, we may have virtually nothing "real" left."

Dan,

You (humorously) engage in hyperbole of course. I'm not sure I share your dread of the internet economy. The billions of dollars invested in Amazon will clearly benefit the shipping industry, warehousing, transportation, publishing houses, etc. It's still not possible to ship things virtually via e-mail and never will be. As I see it "Mom & Pop" retailers of certain consumer products will suffer. But, this is nothing new. Walmart has been making them suffer for years. Shall we blame Walmart investors for misallocating economic resources? Likewise, will the billions going into Amazon prevent investments in "real" industry? Marginally, at best I think. As long as the perception exists that companies like Monsanto and other biotechs will develop useful profitable products there will always be people like us to invest in them.

It's possible to extrapolate other benefits. With millions of less trips to the mall you can imagine the savings in gasoline. Less inflation, not bad for the environment and less dependence on foreign oil.
