Off-topic question for anyone.

I was putting together a pretty sweet system for a client today for use as a graphics workstation (P3-500, 768Mg RAM, 36GB IBM Ultra2, 32Mg Accelgraphics Eclipse II, Adaptec 2940U2W, Viewsonic 21"...[The system made me drool let me tell you]...) and we got into a conversation about SCSI cards.

I happen to like the Adaptec 2940U2W a lot, and it's pretty cheap if you can get it OEM. Retail box is a joke, but I was wondering if any of you can make any good recommendations other than adaptec.

A friend was looking at the Diamond Fireport 40...some people on eBay were selling 'em for about $70 US. The 2940U2W costs us $350 CD which is a bit stiff.

Let me know if you've had experience with other cards.

Rich

I've added a 4.5 gig Quantum Viking II in a Data Port removable tray to be used solely for TA. It's working out very well for alot of speedy database accessing. I had to go with scsi as all IDE channels are taken and the accessing performance is noticably much better. This is an important drive and I wanted to isolate it from all thats accumulated on my primary drive.

You have quite a collection of drives now! How many total? What is in the fourth IDE slot? What is the reason for the removable tray for the SCSI drive?

Isolated in what sense? Did you install the TA app from the primary NT boot and give the location for the install as the SCSI drive? I am not saying it is a bad thing..just not isolated.

I'd like to know if I can put Diskeeper and Backup Exec (both Setum and Forgetum type utility apps) on my KOT drive to auto defrag and backup both the primary NT install and the ScsiTA install which is also NTFS. I'd set them to do their things overnite from their KOT location although I'd like to leave the machine as is, that is booted from either primary NT or ScsiTA. Will this work or would I have to reboot every nite into KOT for Diskeeper and Backup Exec to execute?

I would try to avoid spanning disks with applications if possible or at least minimize it. You will complicate your system if you install on one drive and execute from another. If you add or subtract a drive the drive letters will change and the calls to the executables will not be found. The issue can probably be dealt with but IMO keep it simple if possible.

Why do you want the two programs on the KOT? Is it a space issue on the primary drive?

Maybe. I have no experience with these apps. They will look for files in specific locations..if you change your boot sequence after the program is set up it will most likely get confused. Are we talking about installing to the KOT from a KOT boot or installing to the KOT from a primary NT boot?

Also..any thoughts, recommendations for uninstaller/cleanup programs? Are they safe or do they cause problems by nosing around everywhere, including the registry in some cases such as the EasyClean app?

I can not help much here. I usually stay away from these types of applications. I would approach them with a healthy degree of skepticism. Most apps seem to come with an uninstaller. Do you have some apps that do not?

OTfor ZP: How's that computerized router working out?

Great toy..lots of time spent on the computer working on my first corbel design...progress but it will probably be another six weeks until I have something to show for my efforts.
