John, GlobalStar's mission is to complement and extend the capabilities of the existing cellular networks, at least for the first constellation. Paging and e-mail are probably going to happen, but my Dick Tracy two-way wrist TV will probably have to wait.

On the other hand, as Valueman has mentioned, Loral is building and launching other satellite systems that are specifically optimized for IP data. So, depending on your application, there may be a satellite solution not too far away.

Because the first GlobalStar constellation is not yet operational, it is probably a little premature to speculate as to the specifications of its successor. At the same time it is not possible to state exactly what the wideband capabilities are going to be for terrestrial wireless systems, either, the recent Qualcomm/Ericsson agreement notwithstanding. We will have much more reliable speculation in six months to a year.

If you want interesting, informed speculation, read Maurice Winn's posts on the GlobalStar, Loral, and Qualcomm threads (or anywhere else he posts!) Bring a sandwich, though. Maurice has a LOT to say!
