Anyone know if there is any truth to this...that Kevin Rollins is considering a post at HP.

Kevin - "Don't do it. You have so much going for you at DELL! We need you and you want to be with a winner, not an alsoran."

Hewlett-Packard Taps Christian & Timbers for CEO Hunt

Palo Alto, California, April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Hewlett- Packard Co., the No. 2 computer maker, tapped executive recruiting firm Christian & Timbers to find a replacement for Chief Executive Lewis Platt, according to the search company.

Platt, 57, disclosed plans to step down last month as the company embarks on a plan to split in two. H-P expects to have a successor for Platt in place by the middle of next year.

H-P will split into separately traded companies, one for its main printer and computer businesses and the other for products in the slower-growing medical devices and electronic test equipment markets. The choice of Christian & Timbers likely signals H-P is seeking an executive within the computer business, one consultant said.

''They're not looking at other industries. They'll find (the executive) in technology,'' said Scott Scanlon, chairman and CEO of Hunt-Scanlon Advisors, a Greenwich, Connecticut-based consultant for search firms.

H-P has said that people inside and outside the company will be considered. Among the top internal candidates, analysts said, is Ann Livermore, who runs H-P's enterprise computing division, H- P's largest.

The company's split and Platt's departure come as H-P grapples with declining personal-computer and printer prices and slumping economies in Asia and Latin America.

''This is one of the most important searches we'll see this decade,'' Scanlon said.

Palo Alto, California-based H-P declined to comment.

''We don't confirm the names of companies that we may do business with,'' said Marlene Somsak, an H-P spokeswoman.

H-P fell 1 7/16 to 70. The stock has gained about 2.5 percent this year, compared with a 9.9 percent rise for the Standard & Poor's Computer Systems Index.

Clients

Christian & Timbers, based in Cleveland, specializes in attracting top executives to technology, financial and consumer companies. The company is one of the fastest-growing search firms in the U.S., Scanlon said.

Clients include Cabletron Systems Inc., the No. 4 computer- networking company, and Teradyne Inc., a maker of semiconductor and electronics test equipment. The firm also counts Buy.com, iVillage and Talk City among its clients, indicating that H-P may be exploring executives with experience in the Internet and electronic commerce.

Christian & Timbers's revenue rose 40 percent to $27 million in 1998 from the year earlier, Scanlon said.

''They've been on a real tear,'' Scanlon said.

Candidates

Candidates mentioned after Platt said he intended to step down included Rick Belluzzo, chairman and CEO of Silicon Graphics Inc. and H-P's former No. 2 executive; Edward Zander, chief operating officer of Sun Microsystems Inc.; Mike Winkler, senior vice president of personal-computer products at Compaq Computer Corp.; and Samuel Palmisano, senior vice president and group executive in International Business Machines Corp.'s services unit.

Others included Kevin Rollins, vice chairman of Dell Computer Corp., and John Rose, Compaq's vice president of enterprise computing.

H-P also gave new titles and responsibilities to four top executives, affording them a chance to stand out by running the server computer, personal computer, inkjet printer and laser printer divisions as separate businesses.

Livermore, Duane Zitzner, Antonio Perez and Carolyn Ticknor will assume the title of president and CEO of his or her division.

Re Real time quotes:
Just a side note that MSDW provides real time quotes for free if one has an account there. Not streaming(you have to refresh for an update). I have found it useful to have both a discount and a full
service broker as their people can answer a full range of questions
and we can exchange advice( most of those I deal with own Dell)HEHE
Dealing with one option at a time costs about the same either place, but stocks fees are much cheaper at the discount broker unless one buys under $200 worth ( MSDW has a 10% max. fee.)
Chinese market is up almost 5% and the Globex is green. Looks like a good opening today.
