Hi Eric,

The install guy estimated I have 600 feet of twisted pair cable between me and the exchange, which is literally 2 blocks away. One of those rare lucky breaks, I guess.

I recently heard that US West is dropping their monthly rates pretty substantially, to something like $20/mo for 256kbps. I am hoping GTE follows suit shortly.

Gary, it's both modem and service dependent, but since the modem comes with the service [to min TS calls probably because standards aren't fully set] and since the phone company checks the distance from CO before selling a package, it's essentially dependent upon which service package you purchase.

There are several different flavors of DSL modems out there now, and they seem to have slightly different characteristics with regard to inbound/outbound symmetry and maximum speed.

Also, the distance the user is to the central office makes a difference, as with very long phone lines the signal poops out and you have to run it at a slower maximum rate. You and I might have exactly the same DSL modem, but depending on our locations and distance to the CO, one of us might have greater max rates. But the package will guarantee the same minimum speed (according to the type of service package you buy.)

Unlike cable, where speed degradation is according to random total usage, the phone company will guarantee a user a min speed. And this is guaranteed by the phone company before the sale of each individual consumer DSL package.

Also, your phone may be placed on this same DSL line, which eliminates a 2nd phone line charge.
