At the risk of beating the dead horse, I think you've missed the essence of my point about the three modes.

I wrote: TDMA will be one of three options that will probably be proposed for inclusion in the 3G standard.

You countered with: To say the phones themselves, the boxes, will start out with a menu of choices is a given which causes me to infer that we agree up to that point.

However, you went on to mention that the least likely surviving phone will be one that includes the three technological modes - CDMA, GSM and TDMA.

Before that comes to fruition, my guess is that the standard will be changed. I don't know enough about the history of the ITU, but my understanding is that standards bodies rarely go against the grain of de facto standards.

The real issue for me is that a world-wide standard becomes established. That is what will get the pie growing faster for everyone. Thinking beyond the initial standard is in my opinion putting the cart before the horse.
