Meanwhile, the market will be on the watch for the first quarter earnings report from Yahoo! (YHOO), which will be unleashed after the closing bell. The First Call consensus estimate stands at 8 cents a share, compared to 2 cents a year ago. Terence Gabriel, technical analyst at IDEAglobal.com, said Tuesday's action in the Internet bellwether suggested it's topping out. He noted that the last five times Yahoo! unleashed its earnings, the stock had reached its top the day before. Yahoo! reached a lifetime high of 244 Tuesday, before giving back gains as selling kicked in during afternoon trading. Yahoo! ended off 4 1/4 to 214 7/8 on Tuesday but eked out decent gains in after-hours trading on Instinet, where it last traded at 225 on Wednesday.
