Ulead win:
Ulead Systems Announces Support of C-Cube's DVxplore MPEG-2 Encoder Solution
Strategic Relationship Accelerates Adoption of Next-Generation MPEG2 Encoding And Editing Solutions
TORRANCE, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Ulead® Systems Inc. has announced plans that their award-winning VideoStudio software will support the new DVxplore MPEG-2 solution recently released by C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq: CUBE - news). Ulead believes that the next wave of video editing products built around this solution will lead the way for mass adoption of video editing by consumers.

''We value our long relationship with C-Cube and are pleased to be the first software vendor in our category to support the DVxplore solution,'' said Dr. Liming Chen, president of Ulead Systems, Inc. ''We've worked hard to offer consumers the best possible software tools for working with video. We're happy to see C-Cube develop leading-edge MPEG-2 encoding hardware to help make the total consumer experience a positive one.''

''Low-cost MPEG-2 encoding offers exciting new opportunities for PC and board manufacturers,'' said Chris Day, Senior Director of Marketing for C-Cube's PC/Codec Division. ''The Ulead VideoStudio offers these developers a consumer video editing application that is fun and easy-to-use, allowing for the creation of home movies on desktop systems.''

Higher Quality Video, Lower Desktop Requirements

Traditionally, the biggest obstacles to consumer video adoption have been hardware constraints, complexity and picture quality. These problems are solved when using Ulead VideoStudio together with a video card that integrates C-Cube's DVxplore solution. Users can now create, edit, and playback DVD-quality MPEG-2 video on low-cost, mainstream PCs that utilize standard EIDE hard disk drives. DVxplore enables this through MPEG-2 video compression, which has a significantly lower data rate than conventional Motion-JPEG video. What this means to end users is that they can now work with video files on standard hard drives as well as create significantly longer video files while using these drives (20 minutes versus a typical 8 minues). VideoStudio's proprietary SmartRender(TM) technology, users can save even more time and disk space. DVxplore-based products allow users to leverage Ulead's SmartRender ''changes only'' technology, eliminating the need to re-render entire video sequences when only slight changes have been made.

Real-time Effects, Frame-Accurate Editing and Less Expensive Systems

C-Cube's DVxplore and Ulead's VideoStudio have worked together to take advantage of DVxplore's ability to perform frame accurate splicing and editing of MPEG-2 video. This provides for precise synchronization of all media, such as video, audio, special effects, still images, titles and transitions. VideoStudio's SmartRender and native MPEG-2 support also prevents any degradation in quality due to unnecessary recompression. Because DVxplore allows the use of real-time special effects, VideoStudio provides a wealth of unique and interesting effects that consumers can insert into their video clips. Real-time transition effects make DVxplore-based products and VideoStudio capable of performing like high-end video editing solutions. This revolutionary technology finally permits consumers to work with high-quality video on standard machines and see their results in real-time.

About VideoStudio

Ulead's VideoStudio received press recognition early on by being named a finalist in PCComputing's prestigious 1998 Most Valuable Product (MVP) Awards and placed on Windows Magazine's WinList for several months. VideoStudio is the perfect tool for anyone interested in getting more out of their home videos, without investing a lot of time. Videos can be created in four easy steps and a Guided Help section easily moves users through the capturing of video, arranging clips, adding other media and the output processes.

Sony and Vibrint Technologies Announce Collaboration to Deliver End-to-End MPEG
Solution for News Acquisition and Editing

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
NAB99 Booth No. L13126

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1999--

Companies to Demonstrate Sony DNW-A75 and Vibrint NewsEdit(TM)
Compatibility at NAB '99

Sony and Vibrint Technologies, Inc. announced today that they are
collaborating to provide broadcasters with a high-quality,
cost-effective, end-to-end solution for capturing and editing news
content.
The companies' initial collaboration is focused on SDTI-CP
(Serial Data Transport Interface-Content Package) connectivity between
Sony's Betacam SX(R) products and Vibrint's NewsEdit, a computer-based
hard news editing system. The digital transfer capabilities of SDTI-CP
will allow broadcasters to capture in the Betacam SX format and then
edit directly from tape-to-disk on Vibrint's NewsEdit without any
generation loss.
According to both companies, the relationship is a positive
response to the industry's desire for a common digital signal
interface between leading technology providers.
"Our collaboration with Vibrint Technologies further demonstrates
Sony's commitment to providing customers with open, interoperable
solutions based on the established, international MPEG-2 standard,"
said Anthony Gargano, senior vice president of communications systems
for Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company.
"Vibrint's NewsEdit complements our Betacam SX product line
because its capabilities are ideally suited for hard news and it
supports our strategy of integrating core elements from leading
providers into complete high-quality solutions."
"When it comes to news acquisition, the Sony Betacam SX format
makes an excellent choice for broadcasters," said Roland Boucher,
Vibrint's vice president of marketing.
"By integrating the SDTI-CP technology into NewsEdit, Vibrint can
now offer broadcasters the flexibility of capturing and transferring
native MPEG video streams, from Betacam SX product, through SDTI-CP
and standard computer network interfaces. Either way, editing occurs
direct from tape-to-disk without decoding and re-encoding media from
one system to the other. There's no generation loss and the entire
process becomes faster."
Broadcasters can see a technology demonstration of Vibrint's
SDTI-CP connection to a DNW-A75 Betacam SX recorder at NAB'99 in
Vibrint's booth No. L13126. NewsEdit, the only nonlinear editor
designed and priced to match the capabilities of a standard record
deck, is currently in on-air beta testing and it is scheduled to ship
around the NAB timeframe; SDTI-CP connectivity will be available in
Q3.
SDTI-CP (Serial Data Transport Interface-Content Package), which
is in the final stages of standardization at SMPTE, enables a native
MPEG stream to be transferred to other MPEG-based products, allowing
total system flexibility while maintaining the highest-quality
throughout the entire production chain.
