Is there any way Iridium can use all those sattelites for something else? How functionally specific are they?

I was reading the Business Week article on Iridium. Any opinions on that?

You don't have to go very far from here to get out of touch of a cellular phone. From Sydney to Melbourne along there is coverage more or less along the Hume Highway (900km) and a blob around Canberra where I live. But elsewhere away from that highway there is little coverage.

But then our department at the Uni where I work has a sattelite phone people can use for field work. It's not much bigger than a office desk phone. Not sure how much calls cost etc. Wonder whether the convenience of a handset only phone would be worth the extra cost?

PS when is the quarterly report out?
