CNBC--Nasdaq down 36.21 as "quite strong volume" a billion share day on Naz...Martha Mccallum "how sensitivity tech is...Merrill concerned about Hewlett Pack and Compaq first quarter rev #s, and concerned Y2K issues plaguing software cos more severely than expected, took wind out of sales this a.m., went into market strong out of gate, trading very active this a.m., "reaching for everything", financials continue to be strong today, HP down l and l/4, news came from Merrill at 10:39..."

So it seems to be the Merrill call--CPQ down too, continued worries in boxes--IBM down 2 points--
