Quick report from NGN's Venture Capital conference here in Burlingame, CA: Today's theme: Reinventing the Public Network The three speakers in the first session were from Atmosphere Networks, Omnia (just bought by Ciena), and Siera Systems (ASIC developers). Key factors: * ATM is transport of choice in backbone (McQuillan has pumped an all-IP network for years -- so this is a significant concession.) * Carriers need to migrate from voice to data and need an economic model that makes it possible * Multipurpose, platform independent solutions will replace multiple boxes and proprietary platforms NN's been a leader in all three.
