Hello G Forest:

Did you consider boxing your position--short at 9, covered at 2? As long as the position is closed out this year, one can open and close the box as many times as wanted. The short side of the box retains its age, which if stock gets called is nice to have. If your short is covered for 1999, then for tax purposes, I understand it would make no difference if boxed or not as long as the total position is closed out by year end. It keeps options open that are lost without boxing.

I boxed ZITL today because of the grotesque longevity of ZITL--more than a year beyond my rational expectations. I suspect a possible round of fantastic hype toward internet leanings yet may be launched. The seeds seem to have been sown along those lines in the last 3 or 4 press releases with the new emphases versus the languishing of several elements of the persistent old y2k hype. The upside PR breakouts are quite brief though, sometimes only being hours in duration. I don't expect anything over 5, unless Zitel can manage to make the systematic loss of equity into some kind internet virtue as the strange brew internet issues that seem to zoom in price with massive losses and no solid prospects for earnings. Zitel has the operating 'model', but the tag still says non-internet, which is not allowed. Internet is a must label for freak valuations and prices. The popularity of that, too, will wane. My guess now is when some hot IPO's flop too quickly, then the already issued will fall in scrutiny, too. No real basis for the thought. Just contemplating what could be the key now.
Best regards,
m

If that's the case, I guess there's no point in holding this one for over a year. I'm finally out.

If you don't fear the stock popping, you can hold the short position forever and avoid paying taxes on the gains. You only have to pay taxes if the stock becomes "substantially worthless" (whatever that means).
