Internet shrs gain, lower-profile cos shoot ahead
NEW YORK, April 7 (Reuters) - Internet stocks were mostly
higher on Wednesday, with some of the lower-profile companies
in the group shooting ahead and grabbing investor attention.
Investors extended their recent frenzy for audio- and
video-related cyberstocks, which was spurred by Yahoo Inc.'s
<YHOO.O> $5.7 billion buyout of Broadcast.com Inc. <BCST.O>,
the top supplier of such content over the Internet.
RealNetworks <RNWK.O> and Audiohighway.com <AHWY.O> were
among the stocks that have benefited from this frenzy.
RealNetworks was up 18-9/16 at 214, while Audiohighway.com was
up 9-5/8 at 27.
"It seems that in the Internet group, if there is expansion
or highlight or a new market for one company, it helps the
whole sector," said Peter Coolidge," senior equity trader at
Brean Murray and Co.
In addition, traders said excitement over Yahoo's earnings
report, expected after the market closes Wednesday, was
boosting the overall sector. Yahoo shares were up 1-1/8 at 216.
Other standouts included Spyglass Inc. <SPYG.O>, which was
up 6-3/8 at 15-1/4 amid news that it signed a deal with
Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O> that will provide the company with $20
million over a three-year period.
Also, TCI Music Inc. <TUNE.O> was up 7-7/16 at 37. On
Tuesday, Liberty Media Group <LMGa.N> said it planned to shift
its Internet assets into TCI Music.
Meanwhile, shares of Internet video systems provider
FVC.com <FVCX.O> tumbled 10-3/8 to 7 following news that it
expects to report a first quarter loss as a result of
lower-than-expected revenues.
