Does anyone know about a Satelite MODEM? When we were on our cruise someone told my husband he didn't need a phone line if he got a Satelite modem for his notebook.

"cheap" Lucent modem
When modem speeds got to 28.8 I bought the best I could find since I was assured by analog engineers that this was the limit that would work on phone lines. Now they are all 56K, at that speed everything has to work perfectly.

A laptop, any laptop, has to make compromises. People want them to be small and light and run on batteries. That means they have smaller filters and lower voltages. I would not be surprised if a laptop modem was more sensitive to noise than an external modem, not because it is cheap, but because it's design was constrained.

Re. Dell Inspiron.

Several months ago I bought a DELL Inspiron 3500 (the light-weight sibling of 7000), and I love every aspect of it including the built-in modem.

This computer has travelled with me to some far corners of the world (such as the remote Canadian rockies and Asia) where the phone systems weren't nearly as sophisticated as the US equivalents. but I found no problem receiving data at the expected rate and have been perfectly happy with it.

Just wish to share my own experience with a Dell Inspiron.

Hi,Arthur: re<modems> . I have a Psion Dacom goldcard 56kps in my Latitude CPi 300 , and I have found that it works very fine, when I connect from Rome, but that the connecting and download speed slows down when I connect from Monfalcone, that is a small town with phone lines non as good as they are in Rome. Speed declines further in conditions of bad weather. IMO, connecting speed is very much strongly related to quality of phone lines and noise level on the line than to the modem speed.

Best and sincere regards, L.M.Trentadue
