Racos: I would think that this week the big event is going to be DELL's meeting with analysts. I don't think DELL will do any favours for COMPAQ in its comments - in fact, I think it will take whatever opportunity it is given to state that COMPAQ's problems are company specific, and will imply that COMPAQ is inefficient and poorly focussed and caught in the trap of being a vendor of low-priced PC's with high sales overheads. DELL will stress that its growth will come from taking market share not only in the US but internationally. DELL will also plead to be allowed to keep its high p/e even though its growth in revenues and eps will slow substantially to the mid or low 30%. If the considered response of the market is to bid up DELL's share price, then it might possibly help CPQ's - but not necessarily so. If, on the other hand, the market comes to the conclusion that DELL is fully valued, if not overvalued, then a subsequent correction in DELL is not going to help COMPAQ, in the short term. After that little storm, we can look forward to a few days of non-news from COMPAQ as it prepares for Innovate on 13th-14th. The Forum gives them a great chance to energise the company and its share price, but I would be concerned that it will engage in rather lofty, detached, highly technical presentations about grand strategy and avoid the nitty issues of shareholder value. If that is the case, we will get midly positive press and then the tight knuckles before earnings a little more than a week later. In between, will be the shock-waves from the earnings of other tech companies. It is difficult to see how COMPAQ can direct and control the share price in this period. It could outline its plans for Alta Vista or announce a major deal repecting AV, but somehow I think they will want to preserve that until they are ready for a a big bang later in the year. They could start leaking "good news" about earnings, so that there is a gentle rise in the share price before earnings. In all, a difficult time. Like you, I will be doubling up, and possibly trading a few points within trading ranges.
