Microsoft Windows 2000 Test Version Due This Month

Redmond, Washington, April 7 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. Vice President Brian Valentine said the final test version of the Windows 2000 computer operating system will be released by April 30, and the finished product's arrival depends on customer feedback.

Valentine, who leads development of Windows 2000 for large companies, told journalists and analysts that Microsoft is aiming to release the third and final so-called beta version between April 27 and April 30. In prepared remarks for delivery to Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, Valentine had said the third beta would be released on April 21.

Windows 2000, formerly known as Windows NT, is Microsoft's most ambitious move into the corporate networking market, where it will compete with Novell Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc. Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, said it will ship the final product in the second half. ''My confidence is 95 percent or greater that we're going to ship (the third beta) by the end of April,'' Valentine told journalists and analysts.

The system will be rolled out internally at Microsoft's Redmond, Washington, headquarters starting Friday and finishing Sunday, Valentine said.

The third beta will have complete features and focus on reliability and compatibility, Valentine said in prepared remarks. Previous test versions have lacked all the capabilities in the active directory, a listing of all the personal computers, printers and other devices in a network.

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft fell 3/4 to 93 5/16.
