I did not hear of the rumor but it makes a lot of sense to me. I had been thinking the same thing since MSFT started doing so poorly in the courtroom with their own witnesses. Why have anti-trust action taken against 2 products? Windows98 and Windows NT (or its successor Windows2000). They would remain separate and distinct products with separate markets. The government can't do anything about what MSFT does with browsers or other new technology add-ons on NT or 2000.
The DOJ can attack only Windows98 as a monopoly product.
IMHO, it is too obvious what their strategy has become!! Without the DOJ action, they were probably considering it.
