You would have noticed that most of these mega mergers are eventually accounting tactics to stay stable and survive till business grows more profitable. For outfits like EXXON after the 1984 crash, they cut and cut and cut and finally shaped up and survived! Now they have got used to low oil prices! When prices improve, they will improve the bottom line. With dividends paid, reinvested and a nominal price appreciation over a five year period some of these companies may not be bad at all as a long term investment!
