That was a Digital Equipment Corporation SNAFU. Compaq made the correct move. I think that Digital originally acquired some of their web search technology from a company called Altavista. They also acquired the rights to the technology. But the management (well known for their repeated blunders) did not acquire the site name at that time. So the company simply linked the altavista.com domain name to Digital's AltaVista search engine for several years and the altavista.com site became quite popular -- they even made their home page to look like Digital's Altavista search engine page (leading to a few lawsuits which didn't amount to much).

Why DEC never IPO'd Altavista is a mystery only to be expected from the same management and board of directors who spent a decade preparing their golden parachutes.
