Gateway Announces Membership in Universal ADSL Working Group. Company expects G.lite ADSL trials to begin in second Quarter
NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1999-- Gateway (NYSE: GTW - news) today announced its formal membership to the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG). Gateway, the leading consumer desktop PC vendor in the United States during the fourth quarter of 1998(a), joins other UAWG members in working toward the development of a standard intended to create quick deployment and adoption of ADSL. Gateway expects to begin preliminary trials of G.lite ADSL technology in the second quarter of 1999.

''By joining the UAWG, Gateway is able to work hand-in-hand with other industry leaders to facilitate the adoption of a broadband standard,'' said Daniel Pittard, senior vice president of strategy and new ventures for Gateway. ''We anticipate G.lite ADSL will make up a significant portion of our Internet access strategy in the years to come and believe G.lite ADSL will build upon the momentum Gateway has established via gateway.net.''

Universal ADSL Working Group

The Universal ADSL Working Group is composed of leading PC industry, networking, and telecommunications companies, whose goal is to develop a set of contributions building on the present T1.413 standard intended to create quick deployment and adoption of G.lite ADSL. With the goal of providing consumers with assurance that products and services will work together, the UAWG's work will complement currently planned equipment deployment for full-rate G.lite ADSL and help provide a seamless migration path from today's modems. In addition, the group aims to maximize the economy, speed, and efficiency of both full-rate and G.lite deployments.

''We are excited to welcome a technology pioneer like Gateway into the UAWG'', said Mark Peden, marketing chair for the UAWG. ''Gateway's involvement is an important component in accelerating the adoption of an ADSL standard (G.lite), which will help lead to a more enriching Internet experience for everyone.''

No stranger to pioneering efforts in the realm of the Internet, Gateway was the first PC OEM to sell systems via the Web, and in 1997 became the first PC vendor to serve as a nationwide ISP to its clients.

The UAWG membership reaffirms Gateway's commitment to continually researching and developing new ways to enhance its client's Internet experience.
