<I'm not going to hold my breath and wait for software specifically optimized for the K7.>

All that is required here is for Microsoft to release an upgrade to the Visual C++ compiler like they always do for a new chip. The upgraded compiler will sense which CPU is present and use the appropriately library for floating point routines and perhaps some other routines. It already does this for the P6, P5, 486 etc. It is not a big deal since undoubtedly AMD has already supplied the code to them to do the first generation of optimization. It will be in the next release of Visual C++ if it is not in the current one. This is the most important for the FPU throughput.
